By 1935, when eight of these 15 cuts were recorded, Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli had worked together for nearly two years and developed a near-symbiotic understanding. The turbo-drive engendered by a rhythm section comprising bass and two further guitars was such that a drummer was not only unnecessary but would also have reduced the octane count. Similar encomia apply to the remaining tracks recorded three years later and in all this is definitive proof of why Reinhardt was the first great non-American jazzman--a unique talent belying his handicap and overflowing with originality and lissom power. Particular highlights include the 1935 "Limehouse Blues" and "Moonglow" and 1938's "Them There Eyes".
