Hardly surprising for a musician who, at the age of 18, was invited to be the pianist for the Wynton Marsalis Septet. In addition he has played with the likes of Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Courtney Pine. Eric Reed is always at his most innovative in his playing as leader. He has an obvious love of melody and, despite sophisticated arrangements, it is the melodies that stand out on this album. Eric, himself, contributes nine original compositions and the tenth is a lovely duo version of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo". A great album of hard-driving swing, daring expression, sophistication and elegance in artistry from a fine septet. He is joined by Nagel-Heyer stalwarts Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, trumpeter Marcus Printup and Wayne Escoffery on tenor and soprano saxes, and they all do their reputations no harm at all with contributions that are consistently cogent and debonair. The pivotal track, and the only one not written by Reed, is Ellington's "Mood Indigo"; excellent in its own right, it somehow suffuses the entire session, for both pianistically and compositionally Reed is steeped in Duke. "Fine and Brown" recalls the insouciant brilliance of Johnny Hodges's small group sides, while elsewhere the combination of propulsive swing and audacious orchestral colour is profoundly Ellingtonian. Reed is no mere pasticheur, however. As "Black Beauty" in particular exemplifies, he shapes and directs his music with unalloyed integrity.
